INDIANAPOLIS - A University of Louisville Cardinal basketball player who broke his leg during the Elite 8 game of the NCAA tournament against Duke University remained in Indianapolis on Monday to recover at IU Methodist Hospital.
Kevin Ware broke his leg Sunday night during the first half of the game against Duke at Lucas Oil Stadium when Duke's Tyler Thornton made a 3-pointer to get the Blue Devils within 21-20. Ware tried to contest the shot and his leg buckled when he landed, bending gruesomely. Louisville went on the win the game, 85-63.
Medical trainers immediately covered Ware's leg with a towel and placed him on a stretcher before he was taken to Methodist.
Ware underwent two hours of surgery and his bone had to be reset with a rod, officials said.
Louisville coach Rick Pitino stayed in Indianapolis overnight. Ware is expected to stay at Methodist until Tuesday.
