JUPITER, Fla. - Jupiter's Travis Thompson is not your average oral surgeon. He's training to become a member of the U.S. Olympic Bobsled team.
"It's an adrenaline rush like there is no other," said Thompson.
Thompson has been an athlete all his life, including playing football at the Naval Academy and competing in triathlons for almost a decade.
Just before his 40th birthday, Thompson received an unexpected present; a call from Olympic gold medalist Jim Shea.
"The first thing that went through my mind is 'I thought it was one of my buddies playing a joke,' " Thompson recalled.
This, however, was no prank call. Shea needed someone to push his bobsled, and that person had to be about 6'5", 220 pounds.
Thompson fit the bill, and within ten days of their initial meeting, he was taking a practice run on the bobsled track in Lake Placid, New York.
There's obviously no such facility in South Florida, so Thompson trains at Ultimate Speed, Inc., in Jupiter.
Thompson is now on the cusp of making the US National Team. He just started competing in the US National Team Time Trials.
