Florida Atlantic University Football Coach Carl Pelini resigns after drug use allegations

Assistant Pete Rekstis also steps down

BOCA RATON, Fla. - FAU Athletics Director Pat Chun announced the resignation of head football coach Carl Pelini and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis effective immediately.

"They tendered their resignations to me late this morning after I confronted both coaches with reports relating to their use of illegal drugs," Chun said.

Chun says they admitted to wrongdoing but did not elaborate.

A source told ESPN the coaches attended a recent social event where marijuana was used. ESPN reported that its source said that "although this appears to be an isolated incident, all involved determined it was in the best interest of the program that the coaches resign."

"I apologize for exercising poor judgment. My greatest concerns at this time are for my family, the dedicated FAU players and my staff. I am confident that Pat Chun and the University administration will continue to move the program forward," Pelini said in a statement.

FAU officials say no students were involved, and it did not occur on campus.

Chun said the conduct of the coaches was unacceptable to the athletic department and the university.  "It is a heartbreaking day for us all," he said.

Offensive Coordinator Brian Wright will take over as interim head coach.
