The Tampa Fire Rescue Hazardous Material team responded to the Research and Innovation building at the University of South Florida early Wednesday morning.
It happened around 2:45 a.m. on campus at 3802 Spectrum Blvd.
Students working in an adjacent lab said they called 911 after hearing an explosion.
Tampa Fire Public Information Officer Jason Penny said the explosion happened in a refrigerator in the lab.
The lab is leased out by a contract company, Intezyne, a cancer research drug company.
Tampa Fire Department officials later confirmed there were no hazardous materials involved in the incident and the space has been deemed clear.
The building is expected to be closed all day Wednesday.
