Tourist family from Germany robbed as they slept

Thief goes on shopping spree with their credit car

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives are hoping surveillance videos will jar the memories of witnesses that can lead them to the suspect who robbed a family from Germany while they slept in their motel room in Lauderdale By The Sea.

It happened May 24, when the tourist couple and their two boys, ages 5 and 6, were staying at the Paradise by the Sea motel, at 4208 N. Ocean Drive, detectives said.

The parents don't recall locking the door before they went to bed, but they woke up the next morning to discover their laptop, cell phone, camera, wallet and credit cards all missing from their room, investigators said.

Within eight hours -- from 3:30 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. on May 25 -- the suspect charged about $5,000 worth of merchandise at a Walmart, Home Depot, Publix and 7-Eleven Mobil gas station in Hallandale Beach; the Pep Boys auto parts store and Publix in North Miami Beach, and a Walgreens in Oakland Park, according to the theft report.

The surveillance videos show the suspect walking around the motel pool and shopping at a few of the stores where he used the stolen credit cards.

Investigators are urging anyone with information about the burglar to contact Detective Manny Alvarez at 954-640-4240 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
