OAKLAND PARK, Fla. - An elderly man lost control of his vehicle as he attempted to reverse out a driveway Saturday afternoon in Oakland Park, claiming the life of a 4-year-old boy.
65-year-old Deliverance Delien was visiting a residence in the 700 block of Northwest 42nd Street.
As he left in his silver Chevrolet Tracker around 6:30 p.m. he says he accidentally stepped on the accelerator as he reversed out of the driveway, according to Broward Sheriff's Office.
His car drove in a circle as he sped out of the driveway when it crashed into an unoccupied vehicle parked on the street.
Delien then sped forward to make a U-turn to leave the neighborhood, but again lost control of his SUV.
He drove forward into the front yard of a home at 706 N.W. 42nd Street, struck the vehicle parked in the driveway, which in turn hit 54-year-old Estelida Morales and her 4-year-old grandson as they stood in front of the house.
Oakland Park Fire Rescue transported both victims to Broward Health Medical Center where the toddler was pronounced dead.
Morales was admitted with non-life threatening injuries.
Delien remained on scene and cooperated with BSO Traffic Homicide detectives.
This case is ongoing and charges will be pending the outcome of the investigation.
