TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - The SWAT team was called to a home Tuesday night after a man doused a grill trailer with gasoline, and locked himself inside with his 1-year-old son.
After talking with negotiators, the father of the child did come out of the locked room. The baby was taken into protective custody without incident just after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, some seven-plus hours after the ordeal began.
It started just after 10:00 p.m., when officers with the Tarpon Springs Police Department responded to S Levis Ave near Tarpon Av. regarding a complaint of a possible criminal mischief.
A female there told officers that her 27-year-old son had come inside the house acting strange, and advised her that he doused her "Rib Shack" barbecue grill trailer with gasoline, which was parked in front of the house.
The man then went into a rear bedroom, where his 1-year-old son was sleeping, and locked the door. He did not and would not respond to his mother at all.
The Pinellas County SWAT team was mobilized after the man failed to answer officers' attempts to make contact.
The baby was not injured during the ordeal.
