Suspect dead, deputy wounded; I-95 north closed through Pompano Beach

A civilian was shot dead, Pompano Beach Fire Rescue spokeswoman Sandra King said, and the deputy's car had crashed into a sound barrier on the east side of highway.

The deputy was determined to be in good condition by responders, King said, and was taken by BSO helicopter to a trauma center.

Broward Sheriff's spokesman Jim Leljedal said the male deputy was mainly complaining about back pain and pain around his abdomen.

According to Leljedal, an 11:21 a.m. call came in to dispatchers about bank robbery in progress at a Chase bank, at 2285 N. Federal Hwy.

Deputies followed the suspect onto the northbound lanes of I-95, where the car crash and shooting happened, Leljedal said.

Northbound traffic on I-95 is backed up to Commercial Boulevard. All northbound lanes were closed through the scene until shortly before 1:30 p.m. when the furthest left lane was reopened to motorists. The southbound lanes remain open but traffic is slowing because of onlooker delays.

As alternates, motorists can use Powerline Road, State Road 7, University Drive or Florida's Turnpike to the west of I-95 or Dixie Highway or Federal Highway to the east.
