Stranded manatee rescued from St. Petersburg pond

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A manatee that was stranded in a pond for about a week and a half was rescued Wednesday.

Using nets, Florida Fish and Wildlife officers managed to corral and capture the manatee shortly before noon.

The manatee got into the pond through an inlet on May 31 near 27th Avenue South and 38th Street.

Wildlife officers were hoping it would get back out on its own, but that didn't happened.

Out of concern for its health, officers began their rescue attempt shortly after daybreak.

Once it gets a thorough checkup, the manatee will be released back into the bay.
