Case of teen set on fire delayed

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (AP) -- Prosecutors have more time to file formal charges against the teenagers accused of setting a South Florida boy on fire.

The Broward State Attorney's Office won a nine-day extension Monday, when the five suspects were to appear in separate hearings. Four could be charged as adults, but a 13-year-old accused is too young under Florida law unless the victim dies.

Investigators are still reviewing witness statements and haven't been able to speak with 15-year-old Michael Brewer, who remains intubated in the hospital.

The boy suffered severe injuries last month when the teens allegedly surrounded him, doused him in rubbing alcohol and set him on fire. Police have said they were retaliating in a dispute that began over a video game.
