WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- The Cash for Clunkers Program brought in big money to car dealers, saved drivers thousands of dollars along the way, and is partially credited with getting the U.S. economy rolling again.
The hugely popular program ended a few months ago. If you had an older vehicle that didn’t get such great gas mileage, you could trade it in for much more than it was worth, if you bought an environmentally-friendly car.
These are new numbers gathered by the Scripps Howard News Service. It shows the staggering figures generated by the program.
In the U.S. 677,081 people took advantage of the Cash for Clunkers Program, taking that many gas guzzling, older vehicles off the roads to help the environment and make driving safer. The average price for each new vehicle was placed at $22,451 bringing the total value of the program to a whopping $15,201,641,497.50.
Those huge numbers are given a lot of credit for reviving the country’s ailing economy, along with the bailout of big banks and on Wall Street.
In Florida, the numbers break down like this: 34,260 clunkers were taken off the roads. The average price of the new vehicles by manufactured suggested price, was $21,624. That means the program generated $740,846,698.37.
