TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Steve Ellis, who covered the Florida State Seminoles for two decades for the Tallahassee Democrat, has died. He was 54.

Ellis died Thursday in a Tallahassee hospital, nine days after he suffered a massive heart attack at his home.

A Clemson University graduate, Ellis began covering the Florida State program for a weekly fan newspaper in the early 1980s and was hired to a similar position by the Democrat in 1990.

Ellis is survived by his wife Karen and parents, James and Geraldine Porter Ellis, and a sister, Susie Shinner. A memorial service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the University Center at Florida State.
