State House passes bill increasing drug possession threshold for two drugs

TALLAHASSEE (AP) -- The Florida House passes a bill increasing the weight threshold for trafficking in oxycodone and hydrocodone in a move to ease what have been called overly harsh sentencing guidelines.

The measure (SB360) passed by a vote of 113-2 Friday.

It aims to distinguish between those selling drugs and those caught in possession.

The bill moves the current threshold of four grams of either drug to seven grams of oxycodone and 14 grams of hydrocodone.

The two drugs moved into the crosshairs of law enforcement several years ago as the drugs of choice to sell for operatorscalled pill mills.

Under the bill, individuals caught with either drugs are still subject to penalties, but not as severe as those administered to dealers.
