Shihab Mahmud shot and killed at Wellington gas station, detectives search for gunman

WELLINGTON, Fla. - Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies say 22 year old Shihab Mahmud was robbed, shot, and killed while working at the Chevron Station in Wellington.

Investigators say the armed robbery happened after midnight on Friday.

Friends say Mahmud is from Bangladesh and worked overnights at the gas station while going to school full time at Palm Beach State College during the day.

"He came to America and was going to school with a lot of hopes," friend Mohammad Nayeem said.

Deputies searched a park west of the gas station Friday afternoon looking for evidence.

You can see the suspect in surveillance video captured on store cameras.

"I had to call his family and tell them he passed away. His brother was crying like a baby," Nayeem said.

Mahmud was popular with customers who say he was friendly and driven.

"He was a very positive person and really had everything going for him," customer Jacob Cousins said.

Friends say the victims family is in Arizona and is on their way to South Florida.

Nayeem also works in the gas station business. "We are dying every day. Today here, tomorrow some place else. It keeps happening to us in this industry," Nayeem said.

If you have any information about the incident, call Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS.
