A soldier from Ruskin was killed in combat in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Thursday.
Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Leggett, 39, died Aug. 20 in Kabul from injuries he sustained while engaging with the enemy, the DOD release stated.
Leggett was part of the XVII Airborne Corps based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Leggett was a paratrooper who received the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart and served three combat tours of duty during his nearly 20 years with the Army, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
The details surrounding the incident were not immediately released.
