Senate committee changes mind about guns on campus

Provision taken out of proposed gun bill

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- The Senate's Criminal Justice Committee has taken a provision out of a proposed guns bill that would have allowed the carrying of concealed weapons on college campuses.

State Sen. Paula Dockery offered an amendment at the committee's Wednesday meeting that maintains state law as prohibiting guns on all school grounds, including colleges and universities. There was no objection.

The Lakeland Republican later said public sentiment against guns on campus persuaded her to make the change.

The bill is sponsored by the committee's chairman, Sen. Greg Evers. The Baker Republican said the bill will go forward without the guns on campus language. It also clarifies what's allowed under the state's concealed weapon law.
