UPDATE: Former WPTV meteorologist Rob Lopicola was found guilty of lewd and lascivious conduct and computer pornography charges on Thursday. The jury found him not guilty of lewd and lascivious battery.
Lopicola will be sentenced at 9 a.m. on Friday, December 6. He faces up to twenty-two years in prison.
A jury is deliberating the fate of former WPTV Meteorologist Rob Lopicola who took the stand in his own defense Thursday morning in a Palm Beach County courtroom.
He's on trial on charges related to unlawful sexual activity with a minor.
Lopicola said he never met his alleged teenage victim in person. He said he never saw him until the victim took the stand yesterday.
He said the two were in touch by text messages in 2010.
Lopicola said the victim said he was 15, but Lopicola thought he was role playing. "I like older with younger. So if he wanted to be 17, 16, 15 OK. That's what I was thinking. You know what I mean, like I didn't know what age he really was. That's why I didn't really even know maybe he was 40 pretending to be 18. That's his thing."
Lopicola said he would likely have remembered someone he "hooked up" with, and said he has "hooked up" with a lot of people.
The defense then rested its case.
Before Lopicola testified, Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Detective Linda Anderson was shown on a video interviewing the defendant.
The state then rested its case.
Prosecutors are trying to prove Lopicola knew that his alleged victim in his sex crime case was underage.
The alleged victim took the stand Wednesday and testified for more than four and a half hours.
The defense argues the victim was "doing his own investigation" and was trying to "set up" Lopicola "How To Catch A Predator" style.
