Rise in deaths from synthetic drug ‘Pink' seen across country, including Florida

(NBC 6 MIAMI) Across the country, paramedics are seeing a rise in overdose deaths from powerful drugs legally bought online and shipped to teenagers in the mail.

The drugs are synthetic opioids that are chemically designed to get around laws in the United States.

One of those drugs is called Pink – more than twice as powerful as heroin that you can buy legally online.

Pink is one of a growing number of unregulated chemical compounds being shipped to the United States from abroad.

So far, eight people have been killed in Florida this year – with over 50 deaths nationwide - while only four states, including Florida, have made it illegal.

The DEA is currently pushing for new laws to ban the chemical compound, but experts say the best way to address this threat for now is by talking openly to your kids about it.
