Pinellas County deputies rescue 24-year-old suicidal man from bridge

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Three Pinellas County deputies are being credited with a rescue of a young suicidal man who was on a railing of the Bay Pines Bridge in St. Petersburg.

The incident was all caught on dash-cam video and released on YouTube.

Deputies responded to reports of a suicidal person on Sunday around 9:30 in the morning. Arriving deputies found a 24-year-old man who was very distraught. The man told the deputies he was upset about recent financial and relationship issues.

Sergeant Jeff Esterline attempted to talk the man off of the railing, but deputies say it quickly became evident that he was intending to jump. Corporal James Brueckne joined Sgt. Esterline in talking to the man and engaging him and keeping his attention.

As the two continued to converse with the man, Deputy Troy Savetz approached from a blind spot and was able to grab him off the railing.

Deputies say while the man was originally combative, he later thanked the deputies for pulling him off the railing.

The 24-year-old was then transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
