Palm Tran bus caught in the crossfire when police and a gunman exchanged shots, passenger says

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. - A Palm Tran bus was caught in the crossfire after dozens of gunshots were exchanged between Riviera Beach police and an armed suspect.

"As soon as we stopped we could hear all this popping and I said 'this is not fireworks.' We could see cops running out into the street and shooting at the car," a passenger on the bus said.

The passenger says everyone on the bus dropped to the floor.

One bullet hit the front window, but no one on the bus was injured.

Riviera Beach police say it all started when they surrounded a car with a sleeping man inside with a gun on the passenger seat early Monday morning at a gas station near Blue Heron Boulevard and Broadway.

Police say the man woke up, and took off shooting.

"It concerns me that someone has the nerve to shoot at a law enforcement officer," Riviera Beach Police spokeswoman Rose Ann Brown said.

No police officers were hit, but dozens of shots were exchanged and the man took off into a nearby neighborhood.

"I don't know how this guy got away. He has to be back there somewhere because there were so many police around…there is just no way," witness Bob Fulton said.

Police say the suspect tried to carjack a woman, but was not successful.

"They need to catch him because he might do something like this again," a passenger on the bus said.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is assisting with the manhunt.

If you have any information about the suspect, call Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS.
