ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A St. Petersburg Fire Rescue spokesman says a man is dead after an explosion Sunday morning.
According to Lt. Joel Granada, the blast occurred at an apartment complex at 5865 37th Avenue North just before 6:00 a.m.
A group was preparing for a scuba trip when one of the tanks exploded.
The man carrying the tank was transported to St. Petersburg General Hospital, where he died.
He's identified as 23-year-old Russell Vanhorn, an Iraq war veteran.
There were two others in the apartment who were not injured.
The explosion blew out the apartment door and front windows, and damage several cars.
Crews evacuated surrounding units to check the structure of the building.
The incident remains under investigation.
