One person was taken into custody Tuesday after a police-involved shooting near the University of Miami campus.
The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. on U.S. 1 and Red Road.

Coral Gables police said a vehicle drove by a speed-limit and tag reader, which detected the silver Toyota was stolen.

That's when officers tried to stop the stolen vehicle. Police said the driver almost hit a patrol car and that's when shots were fired.

"He attempted to strike the officer and that's where the officer discharged his firearm, the vehicle continued to travel westbound on Ponce De Leon where he  struck two other vehicles and came to stop near the UM baseball field," said Officer Kelly Denham.

The suspect took off on foot. Officers caught up with the suspect and arrested the person.

The officer involved in the foot chase broke his hand, police said. The people in the two vehicles that were struck by the suspect's car also suffered minor injuries.

Earlier, Coral Gables police said a gunman fired shots at a police department issued speed-limit reader that was on the road. It was later revealed that only officers opened fire.

University Police tweeted there was no threat to "life safety," but asked students and staff to avoid the area. The roads were shut down from South Alhambra Circle to San Amaro Drive.
