Man arrested after false story of abandoned newborn

DEBARY, Fla.-- A man was arrested Monday morning after police said that he claimed that he found a baby abandoned at a convenience store.  The baby was apparently his girlfriend's.

Ralph Garlick, Jr., the man who reported discovering the baby, is charged with knowingly giving false information to law enforcement during an investigation and resisting an officer without violence.

After questioning by Sheriff's investigators, Garlick, 53, admitted lying to deputies.

Although he's not the father, the baby belongs to his girlfriend, who gave birth early Monday morning at an apartment complex in Orange City.

Garlick said that he was trying to bring the baby to a safe location because his girlfriend didn't want to keep it.

The newborn baby is being treated at an Orlando hospital.  Once medically cleared, the baby will be turned over to the Florida Department of Children and Families.
