NAACP asks Justice Department to probe Miami Gardens Police Department

MIAMI (AP) -- The NAACP is asking the Justice Department to open a civil rights investigation into allegations of harassment and misconduct by officers of the Miami Gardens Police Department.

NAACP officials said Tuesday the allegations are focused on a convenience store equipped with video cameras that recorded many of the questionable encounters and arrests. They include a store employee arrested 62 times for trespassing even though he was working there.

The store's owner has also filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city a few miles north of Miami. That lawsuit claims the police are violating people's rights through illegal stop-and-frisks, arrests and other tactics.

Miami Gardens city and police officials did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.
