Lakeland police officer shot, suspect in custody

Suffered life-threatening injuries

LAKELAND, Fla. - After a massive manhunt, law enforcement officers captured shooting suspect Kyle Williams Monday morning.  He faces a charge of attempted murder after Lakeland Officer Arnulfo Crispin was badly injured Sunday night.

Officers captured Williams, 19, around 8:15 a.m.

Officer Crispin was in critical condition after undergoing surgery at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

"I was told by the doctor who performed the surgery, the officer  is in very critical to grave condition," said Lakeland Police Chief Lisa Womack.  "It is traumatizing. the guys in his squad are very angry, very frustrated, but we're professionals and we're doing our job."

Nearly 100 law enforcement officers from six different agencies were involved in the search for Williams. His mother encouraged him to surrender, according to reports.

Officer Crispin was shot shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday as he checked out three suspicious subjects in the 1900 block of Crystal Grove Lane.

Crispin radioed dispatchers and then was not heard from again.  He was found by a second officer who responded to the scene.

A perimeter was sent up in the area and a number of roads were closed while officers conducted a search, which included door-to-door.  Individual vehicles were still being stopped and searched at 8 a.m. Monday.

Williams faces a charge of Attempted First-Degree Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer with a Firearm.
