Juan De Dios Rodriguez: Man sentenced for deadly punch attack at Sarasota restaurant

SARASOTA, Fla. - A man will spend 11 years in prison for killing the manager a Sarasota restaurant with a punch.

Juan De Dios Rodriguez, 20, pleaded no contest Tuesday to manslaughter.

Authorities say Rodriguez hit the manager, who died of head trauma, after he and his friends left the restaurant without paying their bill in July 2013.

Taian "Andrew" Tian died July 19, five days after the beating near the New Dynasty Chinese Buffet at 6131 S. Tamiami Trail.

According to employees and eyewitnesses, Tian had followed three men out of the restaurant after they failed to pay for their meal. Tian was found in the driveway of a nearby business unconscious and with severe head trauma.

Rodriguez, a documented gang member with a violent past, threw the punch that knocked Tian to the ground, according to a sheriff's statement.

Tian was a civil engineer from China who came over to "give his son a better life." His son is a pharmaceuticals student in Gainesville.
