Joseph Gibbons-Nix: Man accused of threatening to kill girlfriend, smashing hamster with shoe

A 35-year-old man is accused of terrorizing his girlfriend over a five-day period — beating, strangling and sexually battering her — and killing their pet hamsters, including smashing one with a shoe, Hollywood police said.

Joseph Gibbons-Nix, of Hollywood, was ordered held without bail in Broward County Jail during his first appearance court hearing Thursday.

He was charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic battery by strangulation, causing cruel death, pain and suffering to an animal, domestic violence and sexual assault with a weapon.

Gibbons-Nix was arrested Wednesday, but the alleged incidents occurred between Dec. 14 and Tuesday, when she finally broke away from his attacks, according to a police report.

The alleged victim walked to a gas station in the 2600 block of Hollywood Boulevard and met police there after dialing 911. She told authorities that Gibbons-Nix had beat her and killed their pet hamsters. She was afraid he might also attack their roommate, police said.

The woman, who has dated Gibbons-Nix for about seven years, told police that he had been proclaiming to be "God" and had forced her to perform sex acts and strangled, head butted, bit and struck her throughout the ordeal.

The series of assaults started Dec. 14, when he awoke the woman and ordered her to perform a sex act on him, then punched her on the head, face and arms and told her she was "doing it wrong," according to the police report.

She also told police that he strangled her to the point that she felt she almost lost consciousness.

On Sunday, when the woman came home from work, Gibbons-Nix allegedly told her the chirping bird inside the home needed to die before again forcing her to perform a sex act against her will, the report said.

He again struck her and attempted to strangle her, police said.

On Monday, he continued similar attacks, which progressively got worse, police said.

On Tuesday, Gibbons-Nix blew up when he believed the "American Dad" television show the woman watched was mocking him, police said.

The alleged victim left the home, but upon her return, Gibbons-Nix punched her throughout her body, again forced her to engage in a sex act against her will and attacked her by throwing a metal basket at her head and threatening to stab her to death with a knife, police said.

He later sexually battered her again, according to the police report, and told the woman that their two pet hamsters were "ungodly creatures."

That's when he picked one up and threw it forcefully on the ground; police said the animal died on impact. Gibbons-Nix also slammed the other hamster to the ground and smashed it with a shoe, police said.

On Wednesday, when the alleged victim asked if he planned to continue hurting her, Gibbons-Nix said he would and the woman left the home to seek help, according to the police report.
