Jordyn Howe is sentenced in school bus shooting

MIAMI (AP) -- A South Florida teen accused of fatally shooting a girl on a school bus has avoided prison time.

As part of a deal with Miami-Dade County prosecutors, 16-year-old Jordyn Howe pleaded guilty Tuesday to manslaughter with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a minor and carrying a concealed weapon. He was adjudicated as a juvenile, though he had previously been charged as an adult.

Howe must now attend a juvenile rehabilitation academy and later speak at schools -- alongside his victim's mother -- about the dangers of guns. The Miami Herald reports that Howe will remain under the supervision of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice until he reaches 21.

Authorities say Howe was heading to a Homestead school in November 2012 when he was showing off his stepfather's handgun. The weapon discharged, hitting 13-year-old Lourdes Guzman. She died at a hospital.
