John Rubio strikes Tampa police sergeant's cruiser on Courtney Campbell Causeway

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A Tampa police sergeant suffered bumps and bruises when a car went out of control and struck his cruiser on the Courtney Campbell Causeway.

The incident happened early Monday as Tampa police officers were monitoring the causeway as part of an ongoing racing initiative.

Police say 34-year-old John Rubio of Melbourne now faces charges of unlawful racing on the highway and reckless driving.

Officers say Rubio and another vehicle were crossing the causeway in excess of 100 mph. He tried avoiding hitting another vehicle and lost control, struck the guardrail and started traveling down the shoulder. He struck the sergeant's vehicle.

Rubio refused medical care and was taken to jail.

The sergeant was treated and released from the hospital and returned to work.
