Governor Rick Scott signs tax relief bill in South Florida

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has signed Senate Bill 2142 into law, providing $210.5 million in property tax relief.

The law will cap how much the state's five water management districts tax customers.

The savings will result in a $130 million savings for the 7.5 million customers of the South Florida Water Management District.

That translates into a 30 percent reduction of the amount that the South Florida Water Management District will charge you for your 2012 tax bill.

The South Florida Water Management District expects layoffs as a result of this, but won't say how many of its nearly 2000 employees will be affected.

A better idea of how many people will lose their jobs will come in July or August, according to Joe Collins, the South Florida Water Management District's Chairman of the Board.

Collins assures customers that water supply, water quality, flood control and environmental restoration projects will not be affected.
