Gopher tortoises out in full force, females will be laying eggs from now until May

Against the law to hurt animals, eggs or burrow

Florida Wildlife officers are asking you to keep an eye out for strolling gopher tortoises.

The FWC says this is the time of year when the animals are more active.  From now through May, females will lay eggs the size of ping pong balls in the sandy areas outside their burrows.

You can report injured or dead gopher tortoises by calling the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922.

Harming a gopher tortoise, its burrows or eggs is against the law.
