MIAMI (AP) -- Authorities say Brazilian man sent police and airline officials an email claiming that a plane scheduled to fly from Miami to Brasilia was going to be attacked.
The U.S. Attorney's Office reports that 22-year-old Francisco Fernando Cruz was charged Thursday with transmitting a threat in interstate or foreign commerce. He faces up to five years in prison.
A criminal complaint says Miami-Dade police and TAM Airlines received an email Wednesday that threatened a specific flight on Friday.
Police traced the email to a computer at Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ. The university reportedly captured video of Cruz using the computer.
Authorities learned that Cruz was scheduled to be on the threatened flight and that he was flying from New York to Miami on Thursday.
Cruz was arrested after landing in Miami. He reportedly told investigators that he had sent the email as part of a dare game.
