(WSVN, CNN NEWSOURCE) Fort Lauderdale firefighters have rescued a newborn kitten in distress.

The tiny cat, no more than a couple days old, was heard meowing inside a pipe outside of an apartment complex.

Fire officials say the tiny gray kitten still had its umbilical cord attached and hadn't yet opened its eyes when it was rescued.

"We found this little kitten in a concrete hole sitting on top of a little towel, it looked like it was strapped into the towel with some wires so it really couldn't go anywhere. If it got caught there or not we really don't know. Well, we pulled the kitten out and realized how small it was and the minute we pulled it out we all said, 'oh we've gotta fix this,’ “ said Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Capt. John Heiser.

Rescuers named the kitten Hope.

The little cat is now at a foster home where it can be nursed by an adult cat.
