SUMMERFIELD, Fla. (AP) -- An 86-year-old north Florida woman is out $105,660 after falling victim to a lottery scam.
Marion County Sheriff's deputies say the woman was told she won a $1.8 million lottery a year ago. But a man she identified as Kevin Thomas told her she needed to send him money to cover taxes on the prize before she could collect her winnings.
Authorities learned about scam when bank officials notified a Sumter County Sheriff's deputy about the case.
The woman sent money to three countries but never received the prize.
She told deputies the callers sometimes threatened her. While a deputy was interviewing the woman, she received a call from an unknown number. The deputy answered and the caller hung up.
