Fla. lawmakers sign off on college tuition hikes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida college and universities students may have to pay more to go to school this coming fall.

House and Senate budget negotiators on Friday night agreed to a 3 percent tuition hike -- despite the ardent opposition of Gov. Rick Scott.

Scott has constantly said that tuition had been raised too much in recent years. He will now have to decide whether he wants to veto the hike.

Budget negotiators also agreed to abandon a proposal to shift millions of dollars intended for domestic security programs for use in efforts to bolster security at schools.

Top emergency management and law-enforcement officials in the last few days had begun raising alarms about the proposal in the wake of the deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon
