FHP report: Boynton Beach mom drank three bottles of wine, crashed car on I-75 with kids inside

NORTH NAPLES, Fla. - —A Boynton Beach woman was arrested on Interstate 75 on Friday after admitting she drank 3 and 1/2 bottles of wine and crashed her BMW with two children in the car, authorities said.

After Florida Highway Patrol troopers pulled over Janet Malizia, 49, her 11-year-old son handed investigators a cup of wine from inside the car and described how his mother bought alcohol from an east coast gas station, an arrest report states.

She was arrested shortly before 7 p.m. at I-75's mile marker 113, between the Immokalee Road and Bonita Beach Road exits.

Malizia is accused of smashing into an SUV pulling a trailer on the highway, then fleeing the scene, according to the arrest report.

Her son said he followed her into the gas station after she took a long time to return to the car, and told her she shouldn't be drinking, the report said.

She admitted to troopers she knew it was "wrong to be drinking with her kids in the car," and that she drank 3 and 1/2 bottles of wine out of the five she purchased at the gas station, according to the report.

Malizia is accused of two DUI charges and one count of leaving a crash scene, all misdemeanors.

The report doesn't list the age of the second child, but says their father was called by authorities to pick them up.
