The Florida Highway Patrol found for the driver and passenger of an SUV who left a second passenger to die after crashing into trees early Friday morning.

At 1:04 a.m., troopers responded to an accident near the intersection of U.S. 301 and Bishop Road in the Wimauma area, south of Sun City Center in Hillsborough County.

The FHP reports a 2004 GMC Yukon traveling southbound on U.S. 301 rotated and left the highway. The SUV collided with several trees before stopping.

Two men, the Yukon's driver and his passenger, ran away from the crash scene on foot.

A second male passenger suffered fatal injuries in the crash and died at the scene.

The Florida Highway Patrol does not know if the accident was alcohol-related.

Just before 8:00 a.m., troopers located the driver and passenger in nearby woods. The driver will likely face a felony charge of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Death. Other charges are possible against the driver and possibly the passenger.
