VALPARISO, Fla. (AP) -- The noise from Eglin Air Force Base's new F-35 fighter jets is causing a rift with some residents of the Florida Panhandle town of Valpariso.
The jets take off and land over the town, and some residents say they are louder than older jets.
But base officials say the F-35 generates about the same amount of noise as other fighter jets, though they also say weather conditions can affect noise levels. Officials also say that because Eglin is a training base, it will see more flights of the F-35 than other bases around the country.
The F-35 is known as the Joint Strike Fighter because it is being adopted by the Air Force, Navy and Marines and many NATO countries.
