Diver dies off Pompano Beach as Florida's lobster mini-season begins

A 22-year-old man from Lighthouse Point died Wednesday morning while diving for lobsters on the first day of the mini-season in Pompano Beach.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to a report of an unconscious diver being brought in to the Hillsboro Inlet by boat around 8:20 a.m.

The victim, identified as Joseph Grosso, was part of a professional dive boat that was diving for lobster in 40 feet of water.

The group he was a part of had just come back into the boat from a dive when Grosso decided to re-submerge alone.

The dive boat staff later realized he had not resurfaced and began searching for him, according to a news release from the Broward County Sheriff's Office.  Grosso was later found unresponsive.

He was transferred to a Sea Tow boat and brought to Pompano Beach Fire Rescue crews who were waiting at the Hillsboro Inlet Marina.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Sandra King said paramedics performed CPR and advanced life support procedures Grosso and transported him to Broward Health North, where he was pronounced dead.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office homicide detectives are investigating the case.
