FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Police say a private investigator found two children, ages 4 and 7 years old, wandering outside of A&M Discount Liquor Monday. The woman responsible for watching the children was asleep at the children's home.
According to an arrest report, Dilia Nohemi told investigators "I slipped up. I'm really sorry" when police asked her if she knew where the two children she was to be watching were.
Police responded to the liquor store, located at 2114 Okeechobee Road, around 2 p.m. after receiving a call from a woman who said she found two small children who appeared to have dirt on their arms and face. She asked if they wanted a soda and if they were supposed to be in school. Police say the 7 year old told the woman he didn't go to school anymore.
Police transported the children back to their home to locate their parents.
At the house, police met with Nohemi who advised she was there to watch the children. According to the arrest report, Nohemi told police the children were playing in the backyard. When police told Nohemi the children were not in the backyard and instead were in police custody after being found outside of a liquor store, she confessed that she had fallen asleep.
The children's mother arrived at the home and told police that her 7 year old son was only out of school for the day. Department of Children and Families responded to investigate. The children were placed in the mother's custody.
Nohemi was transported to the St. Lucie County Jail on child neglect charges. She has since bonded out.
