PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - UPDATE: Dayanna Gil died Monday, April 14, 2014 from her injuries. Details can be found here .
News Channel 5 is learning more about the 18 year old victim that was struck by a car early Monday morning.
Dayanna Gil remains hospitalized in critical condition at St. Mary's Medical Center.
Her neighbors and friends, who she attends Port S. Lucie High school with, have nothing but good things to say about Dayanna.
They were all shocked to learn about Dayanna getting hit by a car and the driver leaving the scene.
Jose Torres lives next to the Gil family.
Torres said, "She's always helping her parents and walking the dog and a very polite girl, she says hi to everybody."
Her classmate, Jantera Williams says Dayanna is well liked.
"I had her in my medical skills class. She was really smart. Every time I needed help, she would always help me out. Every morning I get on the bus, she would say hi," said Williams.
The school bus stop is near SW Lucero Drive, where Dayanna was found on the side of the road.
She was flown to St. Mary's medical center with traumatic injuries.
Torres said Lucero Drive is a dangerous road for pedestrians.
"That's the worst street around here," said Torres, "People don't respect it. They go through there like they own the whole neighborhood."
A neighborhood where residents have complained about drivers slowing down and urging local leaders to add sidewalks.
St. Lucie County School administrators will not comment on Dayanna but stated that the safety of their students is a priority and they're praying for the teen and her family.
School administrators said counselors will be on hand to talk to classmates as needed.
