Deputy Mayor in Bonita Springs, Florida, wants city council members to be tested for drugs, alcohol

A Bonita Springs, Fla., city councilman wants his city to test its elected council members for drugs and alcohol.

"We've had some issues with some locally elected officials, drugs and alcohol," says Deputy Mayor Steve McIntosh.

McIntosh is pushing for a unique policy in the Southwest Florida town -- voluntary drug and alcohol testing for members of council. It would include tests at least twice a year before meetings.

Some residents agree it is a good idea.

"Should have been something right from the get go," says Bobby Bella, a Bonita Springs resident.

Other city officials, however, say it's not reason enough to jump on the bandwagon.

City leaders in Bonita Springs will discuss the added change at their meeting Wednesday.
