CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - A 30-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder late Saturday after police say he stabbed his mother to death in a home in the 3700 block of Riverside Drive.
Dee Jony Etienne was arrested in a wooded area southwest of Sample Road and Riverside Drive after a four-hour search that involved Coral Springs police, the Broward Sheriff's Office and Coral Springs SWAT teams, K-9 units and a BSO helicopter.
Etienne's location in the thick woods was identified by heat sensors in the helicopter, leading SWAT and K9 units to close in on where he was hiding under leaves and dirt, said Coral Springs police Lt. Joe McHugh.
When Etienne refused demands to surrender, a Springs K-9 officer released his dog, which went right to him.
Police were called to the residence at 7:50 p.m. by reports of a woman screaming for help, according to McHugh.
Just inside the door of the home police found Joceleine Pericles, 53, with multiple stab wounds. She was taken to Broward Health North, where she was pronounced dead.
Neighbors told police Etienne was swinging violently and repeatedly at his mother in the front yard of the home where they lived. A search warrant was served at the residence Sunday morning, McHugh said.
Meanwhile, police searched for a man in boxer shorts seen running into the nearby wooded area. About midnight Etienne was taken into custody, said McHugh.
The search caused a commotion in area as people gathered to watch the police operation from a nearby Shell gas station and from residences in the adjacent Crescent Cove Apartments.
In addition to murder, Etienne was charged with resisting without violence. He was being held without bond Sunday in the Broward Main Jail.
Authorities ask anyone with information regarding this case to call Detective Ken Johnson of the Coral Springs Police Department at 954-346-1223.
