Deadly lightning strike on Fort Myers Beach, one person was killed and two were injured

FORT MYERS BEACH, FL - One person was killed and two others were injured by a lightning strike on the beach Tuesday afternoon on Fort Myers Beach, NBC-2.com reported.

It said a male in his late teens or early 20s was taken from the scene unconscious after emergency workers were seen performing CPR on him and a teenage girl, who was reported to be conscious, was also transported from the scene in an ambulance.

The lightning strike occurred near the Lani Kai resort.

Fire trucks and ambulances rushed to the scene but were delayed from getting to the victims because of the threat of additional lightning strikes.

Officials say the victims were walking near the water when they were struck.

Fourteen people have been killed by lightning in the U.S. In 2014. Five of those deaths have occurred in Florida.
