Crews are knocking down a Dania Beach hotel to make way for runway at FLL

DANIA BEACH, Fla. - Crews are tearing down a Dania Beach hotel to make room for Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport's new runway.

The Hilton hotel located near I-95 is being torn down in sections. The eight-story hotel was obstructing the flight path to the new runway.

Crews expect the demolition to be complete by June. "The problem with exploding a building would be, you have to be in the building, quite possible a year in advance, gutting it and placing the explosives," says project administrator Richard Lauricella.

Officials say Broward County bought the hotel for $62 million. The new runway is expected to open in September.
