Child run over by van in Pompano Beach Sunday morning has died

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - He wanted to get his ball, so he darted back in front of a van that had just stopped to let him by.

Deshae Gordon, 3, died shortly after at Broward Health Medical Center from his wounds. The Broward Sheriff's Office received a call at 10:40 a.m. Sunday about a child that had been struck by a van in front of The Forum Hotel in Pompano Beach , at 600 SW 6th St, according to a press release.

The driver of a 1995 GMC van, Abaner Penetus, 50, was heading northbound in front of the hotel when the child went into the path of the van and was struck, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue first transported Deshae to Holy Cross Hospital. He was then transported to Broward Health Medical Center where he died, the release said.

Deshae was leaving the Forum Hotel back to Gainesville where he lived after a family vacation with his grandmother, aunts and cousins, said his great-aunt Yvette Latson.

"We thought we had all kids across the street, and then we heard a lady scream," Latson said. "We didn't even know he got hit."

Family members said hotel staff saw Deshae and four other children cross in front of the stopped van. But then, he dropped a ball he was carrying and went back to get it. That's when the van hit him.

"He just turned 3 in September" Latson said.

It is not clear if Penetus faces any charges. BSO Traffic Homicide detectives are still investigating the incident.
