(WESH/NBC) - A big alligator ignored a "no trespassing" sign this past weekend as it sauntered past a school in Central Florida.

It happened outside Deltona Middle School in Volusia County on Sunday evening, so thankfully kids weren't in class.

Resident Karl Miranda was driving by when he spotted the gator and estimated that it was about 10 feet long.

Miranda said he moved to Florida 20 year ago, but it wasn't until he had this experience that he truly felt at home.

"I've had gator before. I was actually looking at the tail. It was kind of good. I'm taking this as an affirmation that I finally, maybe after 20 years, become a Floridian, which is OK with me," said Miranda.

By the time a trapper got to the school, the gator had already left the premises.
