ACLU to challenge drug testing for state workers

MIAMI (AP) -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida will announce a plan to challenge Gov. Rick Scott's executive order mandating the drug testing of state employees regardless of suspicion.

ACLU officials say such screening violates their privacy rights. The organization is holding a press conference Wednesday.

Scott says taxpayers deserve to know that those in public service "are part of a drug-free workplace."

The measure requires testing for potential employees and random drug testing for current employees.

The announcement comes one day after Scott signed a bill requiring drug testing for welfare recipients.

The U.S. Supreme Court has allowed blanket suspicion-less drug testing only if "the risk to public safety is substantial and real."
