NEW YORK (AP) -- A Florida girl tumbled out of a sixth-story window in Brooklyn earlier this week and survived, and police on Friday said she may have been the victim of abuse.
The 7-year-old fell Wednesday afternoon and remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition Friday with a broken pelvis and two collapsed lungs. Police said she had other injuries that could have been the result of abuse. Toxicology tests showed traces of drugs in her system.
The girl lives with her stepmother and biological father in Florida, though police didn't immediately know which city. She had been staying with relatives in Brooklyn. About an hour and a half before she fell, she ran away from the apartment where she was staying because someone told her they were going to send her away, police said.
A person spotted her on the street and contacted police. Officers returned her to the home, where nothing appeared to be amiss, authorities said. Police said she apparently fell and was not pushed.
Child welfare workers also responded and removed two other children from the home while they investigated. Police said they spoke to the girl's father in Florida, and he said she was fine when he spoke to her earlier in the day by phone.
Police were waiting to speak to the girl. No arrests were made.
