The Clay County Sheriff's Office is conducting a death investigation of a high school football player at Camp Blanding.
According to a media release by CCSO, the death of the 14-year-old high school student and football player occurred earlier today following a practice/workout at his team's football camp, south of Middleburg, Florida.
The football camp is held at Camp Blanding but is organized and run by the school's own football staff.
The young man is a home-school athlete from Sebastian River High School in Sebastian and was in the ninth grade.
Police say the football team was at the military facility conducting their start-of-season camp when the young man became ill.
A coach called 911 and the player was transported to Shands Regional Medical Center in Bradford County where he was pronounced deceased.
The player's family has been notified.
Coaches are at the hospital and also with the team, which is en route back to Sebastian this afternoon.
School officials say grief counselors are being made available to SRHS students.
The young man's identity has not yet been released.
